The Western Region
The Western region runs from the border of Guatemala to the beginning of the first mountains reaching the coast in the department (state) of Sonsonate. Probably the most unexplored region of the three it consists of miles and miles of beach breaks, the reef formations of Los Cobanos, and the surrounding area. There are several river mouths interrupting the coast that dry out during the winter season and provide good waves from where the sand has been carried out by the currents. The shifting sand bars all along the coast are very transient but often offer fun, shorter rides. Beach breaks are rarely surfed by local surfers mainly because they spend their time at the points. On most days, generally during early morning, you can catch tons of awesome rides without fighting a crowd. Of course the waves that you are going to surf here are much smaller than those you would find at a perfect cobble stone point (where every wave is the same as the wave that broke before it). But for those who would give up a few long lines for a clean, hollow glassy barrel, this place is for you!
It is important to mention that the possibility of finding anyone else trying to surf the same waves as you in this region is almost non-existent.
Many of the waves in this area are secret spots and therefore will not be named or mentioned here.
Bocana Costa Azul - This is a river mouth which sometimes offers a right, as well as a left. This is not a very consistent break but it is worth checking while in the area because when it’s good, its really good!
La Barra - This is a little town in a beautiful estuary created by a river coming from one of the countries largest natural reserves, “El Imposible”. There is a beautiful mangrove forest which is home to alligators, exotic birds, reptiles and many hundreds of various other species of animals. Thanks to the effort of various ecological groups in the country, this is a protected area. The surf here is beach breaks.
Los Cobanos - As mentioned before, this is home to the largest reef formation in the country. There are several breaks here. Many of them are sensitive to the tide as well as the swell direction. It is definitely a fun region to explore in boat for a great adventure of discovery.
